Personality & Traits
General Overview | Layal is slow to trust anyone, but you wouldn’t know it because she has a way of connecting. When it comes to small talk, she has a way of skipping right over polite conversation and into the nitty gritty of what drives a person around her. She’s well-read on a variety of topics, so if she can get someone talking about something they are interested in, she usually knows enough to follow along and keep them going. Layal will talk about herself as well, and has no reservations sharing stories. It’s her feelings/emotions on personal matters that only a select few will be allowed to see. She cares very little about what people think of her, especially when it comes to standing up for what you believe in, or having fun. As tenacious as she can be, she also has a silly side. If a good song is playing you might find her dancing even if there isn’t a dance floor. When there isn’t a big case bogging the office down, that means there is time for pranks and other shenanigans. |
|
Strengths & Weaknesses | Strengths: honest, truth-seeking, principled, efficient - good global thinker and multi-tasker, empathetic. Weaknesses: blunt, speaks out of turn, emotional/reactionary, can work herself to burnout & compassion fatigue. |
|
Ambitions | Career wise she is comfortable where she is at. She would prefer to be fighting cases in the weeds than to be a judge or the Judge Advocate General - though the thought has crossed her mind for when she’s older and running out of steam. | |
Hobbies & Interests | reading anything and everything; musical theater, dancing (no training just for fun), kick-boxing, practical jokes Likes: coffee (usually only in the mornings), tea, cheap wine, dirty martinis, hasparat (her mother's), nachos, fruity pies and cobblers; crisp mornings with a slight chill in the air; bubble baths/hot tubs/hot springs Dislikes: fish/seafood, kanar, uncomfortable clothes, |
Personal History | Layal was eleven years old when the Cardassian occupation of Bajor finally ended. For the first eleven years of her life the only shelter she knew was in tents or caves, sometimes an abandoned transport as her family was moved from one labor camp to another surviving on minimal rations. She watched as her older brothers ran away one by one to fight in the Resistance, losing one of them in the battles. It had been her plan to join the resistance as well, but they were finally liberated before she was old enough. As Bajor began to put itself back together, Layal’s mother began to pour her heart and soul into making sure that Layal received the best education available to her. Layal was always an avid reader. Fellow Bajorans would share books that they were able to carry and try to preserve, and she would read them over and over, straining her eyes by the moonlight. With access to computers and the Federation’s library, entire new worlds of possibility opened up to her. The more she read, the more she dreamed of who she might become, of what she might be able to do to make the galaxy a better place. Because Layal was such an avid reader, she picked up on other subjects quickly. With her mother’s help advocating for resources, within a couple of years Layla had caught up to her peers who had been raised under a formal education system. As she entered secondary school admittance to Starfleet Academy seemed within her grasp. For the next four years Layal worked hard for that goal. She found herself wanting it so badly that she didn’t know what she would do with herself if she couldn’t get in. Layal’s experiences shaped her into a caring and empathetic person with a tough outer shell and a fighter’s spirit. She’s driven by her desire to seek justice in all areas of life. When she was accepted into Starfleet Academy she majored in Security with a minor in Legal Studies. Her professors noted that Layal was passionate about the work, and that when she took a stance on something she held firm in her convictions, and thought through contrary opinions with well-reasoned arguments. It didn’t take much more than a suggestion for Layal to decide to enroll in Starfleet’s legal academy after graduation, taking two years to earn her JD. After serving for a year as a law clerk, Layal spent most of her legal career as a Prosecutor, save for a two year stint on Deep Space Nine where she worked in Interstellar Law. It didn’t take her long to realize that she missed the work of the prosecutor - fighting for truth and justice at all times. She finished out her two year commitment, then quickly went back to her true calling. Work has taken priority over Layal’s family and personal life on more than one occasion, and those who don’t get her won’t understand the fulfillment she gets from pouring her heart into an important case. Layal’s ex-husband, for example, who is also a judge advocate finally gave her an ultimatum after eleven years of marriage - he wanted to start a family in the next five years and needed to know that she could put the family first. As much as Layal loved him, and as much as it broke her heart, she knew she couldn’t promise that. She felt selfish for thinking that way, but she wasn’t done with her work yet, and couldn’t promise that she would be in his time frame. Rather than waste his time any longer, she let him go. For the last several years Layal has been stationed on Earth, and for the majority of that time she’s had the pleasure of having her eldest brother and his family nearby. Kiel and her sister-in-law, Jena, both taking jobs at the Bajoran Consulate on Earth to be nearby. Medical History: Takes prescribed medication for anxiety, sees a counselor infrequently. |
