His eyes, counter to many Betazoids, are a blue grey colour, and they seem all the more pale in contrast to the darkness of his hair. He has the kind of smile that can come across as either bitterly cold or reassuringly warm depending on the look in his eye and how he's feeling in the moment. He has elegant but strong facial features, which can also contribute to an air of sternness about his looks. |

Personality & Traits
General Overview | James is an intense man, often preferring silence to small talk or answering unwanted questions. When being talked at by people he’s not interested in or he doesn’t like, it’s not unusual for him to keep his mouth closed and simply turn his back on them. Many fights have started that way, but if someone else throws the first punch he’s not above throwing the second. However, he is often the one ploughing in to pull people apart in a brawl or fight. As a half betazoid, he has empathic powers and his upbringing and training has helped him develop and master them. However, it makes him more susceptible to other people’s emotions and he often closes up and becomes cold when his own and other people’s emotions are becoming too overwhelming for him. Despite this, once he opens up to someone he can be a fiercely loyal friend, always willing to help out and share a drink and a joke. He has a generous soul, despite his keen instincts, and even if his head tells him not to get involved, his heart will often overrule him and he ends up helping a person in need, even if he’d never admit that he cares one way or another, not wanting to seem weak. He’s also more compassionate than many might think, able to see the person behind dubious actions. |

Personal History | Not much is known about James’ early years of life. He was born to two Starfleet Intelligence agents. They settled a home in an unknown place away from the Intelligence compound, even though they still worked for the service. No other information was registered until he reached 8 years old, when he was found on a small four person shuttle, hiding under the helm controls, both of his parents dead. The vessel was recovered by Starfleet Intelligence officers and he was taken back to headquarters and questioned. He remained silent, not speaking a word. James remained mute for an entire year, while he was put into an orphanage. One of the higher ranking officers who had dealt with the case, Sy Howse, saw him regularly during that time, and eventually took him out of the home to live in his own dedicated quarters on the intelligence compound he was posted to. James was often alone during the times Sy had to work, but he preferred it immensely over the orphanage and he soon started to talk again...although he never said a word about what happened to his parents. As he grew up on the base, partially tutoring himself via computer programmes and holodeck programmes, he became a highly independent and capable young man, and it really wasn’t surprising that he decided to join Starfleet Intelligence at the age of 17. It was Sy who pushed for it, but James made no complaints...after all, he had known nothing else. He was accepted into Starfleet Academy with Sy as his sponsor, following a core path of intelligence and investigation modules. He applied himself fully, proving himself through three years of intense training before being released into the service as an officer in his own right. He served for many years, serving with fierce loyalty for the group that had practically raised him. He was a part of many kinds of missions, but he was a favoured solo agent, simply because he seemed to favour working alone on missions, be it infiltration, information gathering, sabotage or even outright attack. It wasn’t unusual for him to work missions back-to-back with no real rest in between...the service wasn’t beneath using his loyalty to get the most out of him. Out of nowhere, he was sent an anonymous message that claimed the people he worked for knew more about his parents’ death than they had let on. Still plagued with nightmares and flashbacks of what happened on the shuttle, he started to dig, and when his frustration won out, he started to demand answers. They decided it best to give him some time away from the compound and sent him on an extended mission. It went horribly wrong, and while he has remained tight lipped on the details, the experience led to him leaving the service. He drifted for near on a year, his mood dark and ambition gone. He had no idea what to do and didn’t particularly care either. A chance meeting with an old friend led to him applying to retrain within Starfleet. He wasn’t entirely sure it was a good idea, but his friend encouraged him to at least give it a shot. He opted for security as it seemed the best fit given his experience, but as he progressed through training they decided to put him into the more specialised world of criminal investigation. He served as a criminal apprehension officer for a while, but his past experiences had left their scars and he was transferred to the more cerebral work of detection. A few years later, he was transferred to the USS Artemis, to serve as a Criminal Investigations Officer. |
