Personality & Traits

General Overview Kostis carries a quiet intensity, a look that indicates that she’s seen some things in her time. She is, however, quick to laugh and quick to share a story with those around her, revelling in a gallows humour that can grate from time to time.

Focussed on her work, she has few friends, but for those she counts among them, she is loyal to a fault.
Strengths & Weaknesses + - Physically strong – enjoying Greco-Roman wrestling and weightlifting, Kostis is strong, spending much of her free time looking after her physical health and fitness.
+ - Comms enthusiast – although only a secondary task in her job, Kostis enjoys the comms aspect of her work and spends a good few hours a week keeping abreast of the latest developments and techniques in the field which is really more dynamic than most people think.
+/- - Security trained – adept and keen with her job, Kostis takes great pride in the fact she is good at what she does, and seldom takes criticism well.
+/- - Unjoined – as an Unjoined Trill, Kostis doesn’t have several lifetimes to draw on, relying instead on her own wits to forge his way in the galaxy. She is ambivalent about the Joining in any case.
- Temper – Can lose her temper if sufficiently provoked or frustrated.
Ambitions Kostis would like to see out her service until she hits pension age, and then return to Trill. She has an eye on a farm on the Northern continent where she’ll be able to live of the land in retirement.
Hobbies & Interests Weightlifting, wrestling and comms developments take up a lot of her time. In quieter moments, he enjoys reading a book or watching a film on her PADD.

Personal History Kostis Riehl was born at an auspicious moment in the Trill year, destined for great things.

Or so the remaining vestiges of Trill’s religion stated. Kostis herself never was really that special. She was born to an average family working average jobs on the Trill homeworld. At school she was marked out for her distinct averageness in all but two fields, sports, and communications.

As she grew up, Kostis became interested in wrestling and HAM radios that some Starfleet personnel gifted to the school. They were ancient, with very little practical use in an age of instant subspace comms, but the child enjoyed them and would spend hours tinkering in the local club.

She grew up a popular kid, too unthreatening to be marked out as a rival by anyone else and had a non-descript, average childhood with her family which she now reflects she enjoyed.

The Dominion War focussed her mind on what the future could hold. Seeing holos of Starfleet valiantly defending the Quadrant against Cardassian and Dominion aggression inspired her, and she quietly resolved that one day, she would apply to Starfleet.

Life had other plans, though. Shortly after the conclusion of the War, Kostis’ father took a job off-world, and outside of the Federation. In the crescent of non-aligned worlds that stretched from the Ferengi Alliance to the former Cardassian Empire was Golantis Prime. A small, nondescript world that had cornered the market for O3 gas for sectors around, Golantis had become a small hub for industrial trade. Her father took a job with one of the O3 extractors for good money.

The O3 boom had created massive growth, and Golantis was a hive of activity with species from two quadrants and countless worlds flocking to the world. The boom attracted its share of chancers and ne’er-do-wells and Golantis City acquired a rough, keen edge to its population.

Crime was rife, and Kostis and her family had several run-ins with petty criminals over the years. Determined to better her new homeworld for herself and her fellow citizens, she opted to join the local police force.

Although an average student at best, upon graduation and application to the police college, Kostis was accepted. A mentor would casually remark it was her physical ability and unexpected skill at using comms devices that swung it. That, and her methodical puzzling out of problems.

She quickly found himself with a firm circle of friends, and settled down to an unremarkable, if enjoyable Academy life. Being a police cadet was an ideal world for her – just enough responsibility with just enough oversight to keep him on the straight and narrow.

The Trill graduated in the middle of her class. Spat out of the Academy, she was soon assigned a patrol in the Fifty-Sixth Precinct of Golantis City. A rough part of town, it was newly-built, homes and buildings quickly thrown up to house the workers flocking to the world. For her first two years on the beat Kostis dealt with petty crimes – theft, breaking and entering, actual bodily harm – and proved to be effective at working her patrol. She was clubbable with her partners, but was clearly driven to do more.

As soon as she could, she took the detective’s exam. Passing it, she was quickly promoted to Detective in the Fifty-Sixth and began carving out a role for herself. The youngest of the detectives at the precinct, she was forced to work for every case before she was accepted by her new peers.

Once established, Kostis was assigned to major crimes, her analytical skills being appreciated on some of the thorniest cases the Five-Six would face that decade. Her work ran the gamut from drugs busts to serial killers. In her time in Golantis City, she saw a lot. For a long time she lost herself in her work, growing dour and grim.

It took an intervention from her friends in 2391, concerned at how withdrawn she had become. They gently encouraged her to seek other employment. Kostis took her time considering, but a chance encounter with a Starfleet vessel reignited her interest in serving. Over the next year she got her affairs in order – closing as many of her cases as she could before filing an application to Starfleet.

Accepted in 2393, Kostis underwent accelerated officer training at the Betazed Academy Annexe, naturally specialising in Security and Tactical.

She was first assigned to the Centaur-class USS Sacajawea upon graduation. It was a fairly non-descript job, with Kostis being tasked with patrolling the ship and ensuring she was secure. As the destroyer spent most of its time patrolling Federation space between Betazed and the Klingon border, there was very little action to see.

Kostis occupied his time by going to the gym, making new friends, and fantasizing about the latest portable radio communicators she could get from the quarterly magazine she was subscribed to. Her first tour passed relatively quickly, and she was soon assigned to a new vessel.

Her second assignment was to the far larger Galaxy-class USS Eidolon, tasked with patrolling the Tzenkethi and Talarian borders. The assignment was far more challenging, involving multiple incidents where Tzenkethi raiders would buzz the Eidolon for days at a time, taxing her crew to the limits. Kostis found it a struggle, but discovered a natural resilience within herself and found a well of gallows humour that shocked ber friends.

As the Eidolon moved away from the Tzenkethi border, the incidents grew less, and the rest of the tour proved to be much gentler as the Eidolon was shifted to patrolling the re-established Cardassian border.

At the end of the tour, the crew of the Eidolon was largely split up. Kostis found herself fitting the bill for a ship unique in Starfleet, the Artemis.
