Mission:
Episode 2 - The Sins of History
Location: Chief Medical Officer's Office - Deck 9 - USS Artemis
Timeline: MD009 1400 hrs
Maya was fascinated by the forensic science team. This would be the first time she'd ever worked with one--at least she hoped she'd have the opportunity to do so. The first thing she would need to do was meet the head of the department and have a nice chat. Over tea would be preferable, so she sent an invitation to Siadra to drop by and asked if she liked herb tea.
Siadra sent a reply to Maya letting her know that she loved herbal tea and would be there shortly. A chime announced her arrival and Siadra had a smile when the door opened. "Hello, I am Siadra, of which you already know that."
"Siadra! It's a pleasure to meet you. I'm Maya. Maya Canak. Please, have a seat. Do you have a preference in teas?" The doctor's office was painted a calming blue with accents of green and white to cheer it up a bit. Her desk and sideboard were made from rosewood. Along the top sat a neat row of containers filled with dried herbs and medicinal plants. Above it was a print of the Yucatan jungle. On the wall opposite her desk was a long counter with living plants in square pots of soil embedded in the counter or climbing up a trellis on the wall. Beneath, Maya's tools for feeding and harvesting her plants.
"Please, have a seat," she said, indicting two chairs in another corner next to a small table holding a pot of steaming water, a plate of Mexican tea cookies, sugar, and cream. "The teas I have today are cinnamon, ginger, chamomile, hibiscus, peppermint, and blueberry. What tea or combination of teas would you like?"
Siadra took a moment to look at the personal touches that Maya had put in the office. In fact, this was the first time that Siadra had been in the office of Medical when Viessa had been CMO. "This looks very lovely." giving a smile when her attention focused upon the new CMO. "I would like some peppermint tea if you would please." taking a seat upon the indicated chair.
"A lovely choice." Maya took some peppermint leaves and turned back to Siadra. "Would you like some ginger, lemon balm, or spearmint with it?"
"Just peppermint is fine, I'll add slight amount of sweetener to it when it is done." Siadra giving a smile.
"My grandfather was a doctor. He used herbal remedies whenever possible and taught me about local medicines and what our ancestors used." She waved a hand to her pots and canisters. "I am well-versed in modern medicine, but sometimes a good cup of tea or poultice works as well, so I like to grow my own when I can." She added the leaves to a pot of hot water and set it on a trivet on the table to steep.
"I think that it is good to know the various ways to treat illnesses. " Siadra leaning back into her chair. " What sort of hobbies do you have? Besides the making of herbal remedies?"
"I play a few local instruments. Pan pipes, flute, and guitar. I also like to draw, knit, and crochet. I find that doing something with my hands helps to pass the time when I'm waiting." She checked the timer on the tea and set out two cups. "What about you? What do you like to do?"
"Well, I like to create wearable pieces of art." Siadra responded. "My quarters has yarns of various colours, and a sewing machine and can't forget cloth. And I have tailor form, just to help me put together clothing. I blame that on the host right before me. I do crochet, and I do like to work with plants as well."
"Really? I'd love to see some of your wearable art. I love colors and we don't get to wear them much on a starship." She waved her hand at the pots. "You're welcome to take any of them you wish. I have more." The timer chimed and Maya strained the tea and poured two cups, setting one in front of Siadra. "Help yourself to sugar, honey, or cream." She sat down with her own cup and added a drizzle of honey. "I'd also like to see what you crochet. I love seeing new designs."
Siadra put in some honey into her tea then took a sip. She smiled at the refreshing taste of it. "This hits the spot perfect. I'll see if I can find a corner to set up an area for some plants. "
Maya nodded. But then, she always felt there was room for plants. "How many labs or other areas on the Artemis have plants?"
"There is a Forensic Botany Lab on Deck 5 and there are some plants down in my office, Though not allowed in the lab areas due to worry about contamination while conducting an investigation. I don't know how many others have plants in their quarters as I've not gone in and visit them. This is a relatively new ship." Siadra having a thoughtful expression in her eyes.
"That does make sense. Especially on a ship like this and its mission." Maya took a sip of her tea. "What sort of plants are in the forensic botany lab?"
"I've not quite taken a really good look there, though I thought I had caught sight of a small rose bush with a lovely scent to it. Oh, I almost forgot there are some strawberries plants as well as some blueberries. Nala, she wanted to have some fresh fruit and I said why not. It would go with the snacks we have in the break room."
"Nala...she does facial reconstruction. So, you have no one dedicated to taking care of it, or does Nala do that?"
There was a momentary blank look on Siadra's face then she ruefully shook her head. "I truly do not know. I had forgotten to go and check on the plants as of late. There is an auto-watering system, for the reason of my not remember to check on them. Must make me sound like an irresponsible person."
"Not at all. Especially if this is something new and, from the sound of it, something casual to grow fruit. Perhaps I should have a chat with her? I am interested in growing more than the few plants I can accommodate in my office. I would love to utilize part of the forensic botany lab to do some experiments of my own as well as work with medicinal herbs and flowers."
