Episode 2 - The Sins of History
Location: Holodeck 6 - Deck 6 - USS Artemis
Timeline: MD016 1200 hrs
Vincent walked out of his bedroom and towards the kitchen are where Cassie, his 8 year old daughter, sat at the table looking at a PADD. He was in uniform and had his shoulder holster for his EM-33. The Betazoid/Human Hybrid took a moment to take a sip of coffee.
"Why do I have to stay with her?" Cassie asked as she put her PADD down and looked up at her father.
Vincent smiled a bit as he looked over to Cassie. "You know why, Cass."
"Why can't I stay with Uncle Loktor?"
"Because, Loktor is still on duty and I don't think you want to be hanging around the Crime Scene Investigator's Office." Vincent paused slightly before adding. "I don't think I want you handing around there."
Cassie let out a disappointed sigh and looked back to her PADD. "I don't need a Holo-nanny. I can watch myself."
"I'll decide that." Vincent replied, taking another sip of his coffee. "I don't get it. Holograms never used to bother you before. You love playing on the Holodeck with Loktor all the time. Would it make you feel better if I altered the program so the holo-nanny was Ferengi."
"No, Dad. It's not the same." Cassie groaned in annoyance before putting the PADD down again. "It's not that its a hologram... its... its just that... she's so... blah."
Vincent chuckled slightly. "I don't think my universal translator caught that last part." He put his coffee mug in the replicator and walked over to a shelf by the door. "What exactly is... blah about the Holo-Nanny?" As he asked he opened the box on the shelf and removed his EM-33 Pistol. He tucked it into the shoulder holster.
"It has no... personality." Cassie replied as she raised her voice a bit.
"It's a standard program, Cass. It's not programed to be like the programs you are used to on the holodeck." Vincent replied as he closed the box and walked over to Cassie. "It's just supposed to watch you and keep you out of trouble. Make sure you do you class work and feed you so you don't starve to death." He joked as he sat down by her side. "Look, for now, just power through it. If I can arrange something more to your liking then I'll set it up. Promise."
Cassie looked at her father and let out a sigh. "Can you at least program her to stop smiling so much? It's creepy."
He laughed a bit and leaned forward, kissing her on the forehead, before sitting back down. "Anyway, I arranged for some company for you. Don't worry. It's not a hologram." Vincent said as he he tapped the table. "So, dealing with the Creepy Holo-Nanny may not be as bad."
"What did you do, Dad?" Cassie asked suspiciously.
"You'll see, Cassie. It's a surprise. Just... trust me. You'll love this. I promise." Vincent replied.
Yvette made her way to Vincent's Quarters, Isis walking with her. It was nice to see him again, and couldn't wait to see Cassie again.
Arriving at his door, she pressed the chime and waited, giving Isis a scratch under the jaw.
Vincent heard the chime and put a surprised look on his face. "Who could that be?" He said before letting out a slight laugh and saying. "Enter." In a firm tone.
Yvette walked in with Isis following behind. "Hi." She said with a smile.
"Evie!!" Cassie shouted happily before running over and wrapping her arms around Yvette's waist. The 8 year old was happy to see her and Isis. She had nothing but great memories on board the Repose, playing with Isis and the ships AI Amelia. She wished it was Amelia watching over her and not the Holo-Nanny with the creepy smile.
Vincent rose from his chair and looked over to Yvette with a smile. "Want something to drink before we head out?"
"An orange and pineapple juice, please." Yvette said. Smiling at Cassie, she said. "Its great to see you again, Ma Petite. I hear you don't like your new nanny?"
He walked over to the replicator to get Yvette her drink.
"She's creepy. She has a creepy smile all the time and... she's no fun." Cassie replied.
"Well, I'll see what I can do about that that." Yvette said. "But, for now Isis will keep you company."
Cassie let out a joyful squeal before gently petting Isis. "Thank you... thank you, Evie." She said with a smile as she kept her eyes locked on the cat. "Can I hold her?"
"Okay, but let her go when she wants." Yvette said. "She missed you." She added with a smile.
"I missed her too." Cassie replied as she took the cat in her hands and held her close while stroking her small hand across the cats back.
Vincent walked over to Yvette and handed her the glass of orange and pineapple juice. "Thanks for coming by... and bringing Isis."
"My pleasure, I'm glad they're back together." Yvette said taking a sip of her drink. To Cassie she said. "My niece, Jena is onboard, would like to meet her sometime?"
"Sure." Cassie replied as she looked up to Yvette.
Vincent crossed his arms over his chest before adding. "Maybe later. For now, Yvette and I have some stuff to do, so why don't you stay here with Isis and the holonanny while we go take care of it. We'll be back as soon as we can."
"See you soon, Ma Petite, Isis." Yvette said before finishing her drink.
"Stay out of trouble." Vincent said as he walked over to the door. "Computer: Activate Holographic Nanny."
The figure of an older woman in an old fashion dress appeared by the door. Immediately, the hologram smiled and looked over to Vincent. "Hello, Lieutenant. How may I assist you today?"
"I am leaving with Lieutenant Beauvoir to the holodeck. We'll be back as soon as we can. Please watch over Cassie while we are gone." Vincent said firmly as he tapped on the small panel to open the door leading to the corridor.
"Of course, Lieutenant." She said, her smiling remaining on her face, as she walked off.
Vincent watched her walk away towards Cassie before turning to Yvette. "She does have a creepy smile."
"I can understand Cassie's discomfort, especially in the light of Ferengi Rule of Acquisition 48. The bigger the smile, the sharper the knife."
Vincent rolled his eyes to hearing a Rule of Acquisition. He was considering banning the talk of them in his home for a moment before letting out a slight chuckle. "Between me having to leave for duty, someone has to watch her and I couldn't leave her behind on Betazed with my mother. The Holo-Nanny is the only alternative."
"Perhaps, I can help with that." Yvette said tapping the side of her nose.
Vincent smirked back as he tapped on the small console by the door, opening it. "We'll talk about it later."
"Okay, so what's on the roster today?" Yvette asked.
"Your favorite." He said as he walked through the door. "Target practice." He let out a slight chuckle before crossing his arms a bit. "Figured it was be a good thing to just shoot and talk. Like we used to do."
Yvette laughed. "You know me so well." She said. "So, what are we going to be shooting?"
