Episode 2 - The Sins of History
Location: Office of the Chief Science Officer - Deck 11 - USS Artemis
Timeline: MD011 1000 hrs
Having got her gear stowed away, Jena thought it best to check in with her new Boss. She headed to the Chief Science Officer's Office, arriving there, she adjusted her uniform before pressing the chime.
Siadra raised her head from the microscope. She had been examining a slide which had plant cells upon it. The genus of the plant was an onion, a red onion, she did love the hues of it. Siadra called out, "Enter!" and watched to see who had come a calling.
Jena walked in. "Ensign Coln Jena reporting in, ma'am." She said.
"Welcome, care to get a cup of tea and we chat? There is a small breakroom where we can do so, plus some small cakes to go with the tea." Siadra rising up from where she had been seated.
"Thank you, Ma'am, that would be lovely." Jena said following Siadra.
Siadra led Jena into the breakroom, "What sort of tea would you like? I am planning on making some ginger and ginseng tea for myself. Plus, what sort of cake would you like? I've got some chocolate mini cakes. And I do have some lemon cake as well."
"I'll have the same, as a biologist I appreciate the effectiveness of medicinal plants." Jena said. "An who can say no to chocolate mini cakes?" She added with a smile.
An answering smile from Siadra, "Chocolate it is then. " walking over and making certain the tea water was ready. She had something that kept the water hot, this way Siadra could make her tea without having to wait too long. Besides it tasted better this way, instead of using the replicator.
Two mugs with the tea steeping, along with cakes upon a tray, Siadra brought them over to the table and took a seat.
Jena took a seat and breathed in the aroma of the tea. "Thank you, Ma'am." She said. "My mother and I would have tea, at our home on Bajor, when she wasn't on assignment."
"It is a good way to relax and get to know someone. Or even having a mug of tea and just gaze towards the stars or if on a planet a lovely porch to watch the sunset. Or even welcome the day. Okay so I like having tea." Siadra giving a laugh. She reached over and picked up one of the mini lemon cakes. "Tell me, do you prefer lemon over chocolate?"
"I like lemon, but chocolate I see as a treat." Jena said. Having mentioned her mother, Jena let a single tear run down her cheek. It had been nearly seven years since her mother's ship had disappeared without a trace.
"Have you been in touch with your mother as of late?" Siadra then saw the tear. "Jena, what is wrong? " handing a tissue to Jena to wipe away the tear. "Please tell me."
"My mother was Chief Science Officer on the USS Joseph Banks. It went missing nearly seven ago. I haven't heard from her since then." Jena said. "Thank you." She said accepting the tissue.
"They are missing? That is terrible!" Siadra reaching out and touching Jena's hand in a comforting way. "I am so sorry." Giving her hand a squeeze. "Any idea what area of space were they in?"
"No, I've tried to find out, but everything about it is classified Above Top Secret." Jena said. "My aunt was SI and my grandmother is a Starfleet captain, but they've not been able to get anywhere either."
"I am truly sorry. I do hope that some news will come about." Siadra stated moving back her hand. "Tell me what do you like to do for personal hobbies?"
"I like gardening, I find it restful." Jena said. "Reading, I like to learn new things, my mother got me into it from an early age, and I'm sure it made school a little easier." She smiled. "And soccer keeps me healthy, I even made captain of my high school team."
Siadra was visibly impressed by what Jena mentioned. "Good for you! I like the sound of that. Do you have any special projects going on in the lab yet? Ensign Ryder had a thing going on having strawberries in a basket in the lab. I've not gone to check on them as of late."
"I've been working on plants to help with terraforming, and land reclamation after industrial accidents or other damage to ecosystems." Jena said. "Oh and I love strawberries, its one of the things my aunt, Evie introduced me to."
"That is good, so perhaps once we are done with our snacking. Lets go take a look at your new realm and see what is there?" Siadra taking a drink of her tea, smiling eagerly.
"Sure, that would be great." Jena said returning Siadra's smile.
The tea finished , and the last of the biscuits were eaten, Siadra walked alongside Jena as they went towards the labs. "Have you met Nala as of yet?"
"Yes, she's delightful." Jena said. "I met her when we played Doctor Frankenstein."
"When we get into the lab you will find that I have planted some peppermint, it should be flourishing by now, my making certain that it is in a container and not allowing it to run wild in the lab with its runners." Siadra smiling ear to ear.
"Great, I brought a few plant samples of my own, a mixture of Bajoran and Earth plants mostly, but do also have the P'thal plant from which we can extract Vulcan Red Spice." Jena said.
"That sounds rather appealing to me and I am looking forward to see what you end up doing with the lab." moving through the doors which led into the botany labs.
Looking around, the botanist smiled. "I think, I'm going to like it here, Ma'am." She said.
"I am glad to hear that, this to me is a little piece of paradise. Just seeing something green growing I do like it very much." gazing at the plants she had started so long ago it seems.
"I'll do my best." Jena said.
"Do you have a father? And how is he feeling about your mother's disappearance? I would like to know more about your family as well." Siadra realizing that there was another element of Jena she'd like to know.
"Yes, his name is Jason Beauvoir, he's a Starfleet Science officer." Jena said. "My parents were estranged, Jason didn't even know I existed, until after my mother disappeared. I believe he still loves her and did all he could to try and find her." She paused a moment remembering her mother's smile. "I already mentioned my Grandmother, Captain T'Lisa Anderson, CO of the USS Canterbury, and my aunt, Lieutenant Yvette Beauvoir, she's a Security officer on this very ship. I also have an uncle, Jean-Pierie, who is Jason and Yvette's brother and police inspector. Then there's Granddad Simon, he's an English Lit. professor and an excellent chef."
"Your father didn't know of your existence when you were young. How long ago did he find out about you? And wait your Aunt is here on the Artemis. I will make certain to meet her." Siadra was finding it rather interesting the varied history that Jena had.
"18 years, I sort him out after my mother's disappearance, when I found data about him in my mother's things." Jena smiled. "Since then he's tried to make up for not being around. He even lengthen teaching job at the Academy, and got himself an apartment just off campus, so I could come over and get a good homemade meal at the end of the day."
"That is lovely that he did that." Siadra just beaming with stars in her eyes. "He definitely cares about you very much."
"Yes, I care for him too." Jena said. "I call him 'Professor' as a nickname." She sighed. "But, some times he looks at me, and I think he sees my mother, Tela, not me" and a tear runs down her cheek.
Siadra seeing the tear running down Jena's cheek wrapped an arm around the younger woman, giving her an embrace. "there there, it does happen at times from what others have told me. I think though he does see you as Jena as well."
"I know that mentally, but not emotionally." Jena said.
Siadra gave a solemn nod at what Jena had said. "I guess he maybe caught in the pangs of, feeling guilty as to not having been with her when she needed him the most. " giving another embrace to Jena. "And maybe even more guilt of not knowing of you. She is beautiful much like you are."
Jena moved out of Siadra's embrace. "I'm sorry, Ma'am. I'm being totally unprofessional." She said.
"I am sorry if I overstepped, I didn't find you being unprofessional, at all, no judgement from me. " Siadra moving back a little bit to give Jena some room." giving an apologetic smile. "Anyway I shall leave you to get more familiarized in here. Gardening does bring about its own comfort."
"Thank you, Ma'am." Jena said with a smile. "And thank you for listening, its a little difficult to talk about this with my aunt."
"If you need to talk again, feel free to come to me." Siadra giving a nod. "Now for me to go see what is next on my assignments. I will see you later." the Chief of Science giving a wave before she stepped out of the lab.
Jena sighed and went in search of some gardening gloves.
