Mission: Episode 2 - The Sins of History
Location: Science Lab 2 - Deck 12 - USS Artemis
Timeline: MD010 1330 hrs

Having checked in with the Captain and her department head, Yvette found herself wandering the corridors of her new home.

Eventually she wound up on Deck? near the Science labs. She had a basic understanding of what went on in there, her mother, brother, and niece all being scientists.

Walking into a lab, more or less at random, she studied the equipment present. There was a high definition scanner with a holographic display at one end of the room. There were also other computer terminals present and a storage cabinet, she assumed was for hard copy backups of files.

She was examining the scanner when she heard some enter the room. She turned to see the newcomer.

Nala was humming along to an Ancient Earth tune when she sensed that she wasn't alone and took off her old-fashioned headphones. While Nala could easily have a bluetooth speaker implanted in her ear, she preferred the retroness of the oversized 'Leah muffs' as she called them.

"Hello there! I don't believe I've met you yet. I'm Ensign Nala Rider. What's your name?" Nala extended her hand to the young woman.

Yvette accepted Nala's hand and shook it. "Bonjour, Nala, I'm Lieutenant Yvette Beauvoir, I came aboard just before we entered the Badlands, one of the few perks of having a Starfleet Captain for a mother."

Nala's jaw had trouble staying closed at this information.

"Wwow. I mean, cool! I mean, ahem. So, what brought you to my corner of the lab?" Nala tried to bring the conversation back to 'Earth' as it were.

"Just getting to know my new home and the people I'll be working with." Yvette said. "As for your lab, my older brother is a science officer, my mother was a science officer, before taking the command track, even my niece is a science officer, she's the new Forensic Botanist. Though I'm not a scientist myself, I feel a certain comfort from being in them, if that makes sense?" She added.

"Getting to know your ship and her crew are a great thing to do! Yeah...I think I get it. Wait, she's the new Forensic Botanist? Where?" Nala asked curiously.

"Here, we arrived together." Yvette said. "There's a Forensic Engineer too, Lieutenant Madison, but she's no relation."

"Wow, that's really amazing!" Nala smiled, excited to make new friends and learning new things!

"Hey wait...aren't family not allowed to serve on the same ship?" Nala asked, not remembering how things went.

"That mostly applies to siblings in times of war." Yvette clarified. "My brother, Jason, my niece's father, is currently Chief Science Officer aboard our mother's ship, the Canterbury."

"Ah, gottcha. Thank you for clarifying that. Wow, your family's all in aren't they? Not that that's bad! It's just I'm the only one of my family in Starfleet," Nala explained, picking at some lint on her jacket.

"Yes, but my twin brother, Jean-Pierre bucked the trend, he's a civilian police detective on Earth and he's married to a civilian lawyer." Yvette said.

"Wow, a Detective. Cool," Nala liked a good detective story, but thankfully kept from saying that out loud.

"Like intel work, apparently its nothing like the holo vids." Yvette and they have my lovely nephew, Dylan, he just turned 6."

"I'm sure. Wow, congratulations!" Nala clapped happily.

"What about you, Nala?" Yvette asked. "Do you have any nieces or nephews?"

"Not yet, but my older brother, James, has his eye on a girl, so I hope to in the future!" Nala beamed, giggling as she thought about how her brother was always clumsy when it came to the ladies.

"What made you giggle?" Yvette asked.

"I was just thinking about when my brother James was in Middleschool/Highschool and had trouble talking to the girls. Me and my sister, Sophia, usually ended up being the ones to give them notes from him. A few liked him...but it WAS a bit awkward to get a love letter from someone's little sister instead of them," Nala giggled some more.

"My older brother, Jason is unlucky in love, as a teen he fell in love with with a Klingon while we were on QonoS for a Shakespeare conference. Her brother didn't approve and challenged to a duel. A Klingon friend of my father, convinced the young Klingon that there was, no honour in killing a guest." Yvette said. "Later Jena's mother, Tela, left him after she discovered she was pregnant, and later his Fiancee, Sarah was murdered in front of him."

"Oh man! That's awful! Is he doing okish now?" Nala asked sympathetically.

"Meeting his daughter helped some." Yvette said. "But I worry about him."

"Understandable. You being there for him is the best medicine," Nala hoped she was being encouraging.

"Yes, and he also has an extended family who love him." Yvette said.

"Family is always stronger together," Nala smiled as thoughts of her own family flowed through her mind.

"It was great talking to you, Nala." Yvette said with a smile. "But, I best be moving on."

"Likewise! See you round the ship!" Nala chirped.
