Mission: Episode 2 - The Sins of History
Location: Holodeck 3 - Deck 5 - USS Artemis
Timeline: MD008 1600 hrs

Since it was Fenora's idea to make Frankenstein's monster, she scheduled the holodeck and sent out invitations to science and medical. They only had a couple of hours, but she set out a selection of period-specific snacks on a side table in case anyone got hungry. She added a side room with several bodies of various sizes to extract parts. All had been exsanguinated and properly cleaned.

For the setting, she went with the laboratory from one of her favorite movies from Earth: Young Frankenstein. Everything was in black and white. It wasn't realistic, but she thought it would be fun to work in the same lab in the same universe, which meant no color.

She chose to wear a doctor's smock from the era to add to the ambiance and added a pair of eye protectors and waited for the others to arrive.

"YIKES!" Nala balked for a moment when the color disappeared as she stepped through the Holodeck doors.

"Yo, what the heck's up with the color deprivation...and the interesting getup?" Nala asked when she caught sight of Fenora.

"I spent a lot of time on earth when I was going to college. I was introduced to several notable Frankenstein movies. Two of them used the same laboratory. Frankenstein in 1931 and Young Frankenstein in 1974. Both were in black and white. So, I thought it would be fun to recreate the lab in the same monochromatic black and white."

"Ah...my group never got into Sci-fi...they were only interested in boys and romcoms," Nala rolled her eyes, smoothing her now black jeans with a giggle.

"I guess it keeps things interesting...you don't know what you're picking up!" Nala laughed outright at that, picking up an object from the table.

"Of course you do, you just don't know what color it is." Fenora chuckled. "I was not into boys or romcoms. But I found the social commentary of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein interested and the movies entertaining. I also find the lab more interesting in black and white."

Nala nodded, placing the forceps back on the table.

Viessa walked into the holodeck and watched the colour drain from her in its entirety. "How very monochrome." she smiled. She had spent a lot of time on Earth, long before Starfleet and NX program but this was nice, she liked old black and white movies. "We need to decide early who's shouting 'ITS ALIVE"." she chuckled as she noticed the various bodies present.

"Well, since you mentioned it first, you can, if you wish," Fenora said, smiling at the doctor. "Welcome. I'm Fenora and this is my lab." At least for the moment.

"Hiya Doc!" Nala waved at the newcomer, swinging her legs from her new seated position.

Maya walked in, pausing for a moment as everything turned black and white. "My, that's quite the change. I don't think I've ever desaturated before." She walked further in and turned a full circle, appreciating the setting. "This looks like a perfect mad scientist's laboratory. Well done."

"Thank you. I'm Fenora." The Vulcan gave the doctor a half-bow. "Welcome to my laboratory."

"Doctor Frankenstein's, I presume?" Maya hadn't read the book, but she saw the movie once.

"It seemed appropriate. Make yourself comfortable. We'll get started once everyone's here."

Nala was starting to have fun...and the giggles for some reason. This was different than anything she'd been a part of before, and it was nice being around people who got science.

"Hey, anyone mind if I ask the computer to play 'She Blinded Me With Science'?" Nala suddenly asked.

Maya laughed out loud. "Go right ahead. Add any other sciency songs to the mix."

Nala grinned as she input the information into the Computer.

"Ya'll have to give me more science songs cause that's the only one I know," Nala giggled sheepishly.

"'The Big Bang Theory Theme', 'The Elements', 'Rocket Man', 'Make A Circuit with Me', 'Mister Roboto', 'Mammal', 'Stuck To You', 'Stellar Somnambulance', 'Andromeda Blues', 'Fusion', and 'We Didn't Start the Fire'." Fenora shrugged. "Those were the ones I heard most in school."

Nala giggled as she put the songs into the computer.

"Um, did two different bands play that 'We Didn't Start The Fire' song?" Nala asked just to clarify that she'd heard right.

"We didn't start the Fire?" Siadra sang out stepping inside, amazed at seeing her coloration change to that of film noir. " I feel like my skin has gone flawless." stretching out her arms and twirling slowly around giving out a delighted laugh. "I love it!"

"It's a fitting setting for making a monster. Although we will need to use some technological advances if we want to give our monster life." Fenora gave Siadra a brief Vulcan bow. "The music, however, is Lieutenant Rider's suggestion." We Didn't Start the Fire did happen to be one of her favorite songs because of all the historic references.

Nala waved from where she was programming the music, trying to give each song a slightly spooky feel in conjunction with the theme.

"'We Didn't Start the Fire' is by Billy Joel," Fenora said. "If there's another one, I am not aware of it."

"Ok, gotcha! I just thought I heard it said twice, so I was just clarifying what I'd heard," Nala grinned sheepishly as she finished programming and the room filled with a spooky rendition of She Blinded Me With Science.

"I suggest also adding Toccata and Fugue in D Minor by Bach. An interesting trivia though, Bach may have been inspired by an earlier artist by the name of Dietrich Buxtehude. The piece though by Dietrich, sounds a bit happier than the Fugue. Both though are rather powerful pieces." walking over to where the others were.

"Yes. Classical music should definitely be part of the mix. Especially organ pieces by Bach and Vivaldi," Fenora added.

"Oooh, nice! Ok, it's REALLY getting spookarific up in here!" Nala laughed, finishing the programming and walking over to the rest of the girls.

Fenora looked around. "I'm glad you're here to help with this project. As you can see, it's going to be more pseudo-science than actual science, but we can still have fun and maybe learn something while we're at it. Do any of you have a preference as to how and where we begin?"

"Maybe start at the bottom and work our way up?" Nala suggested.

Having never participated in such an endeavor, Nala just figured that it was like building a build: start with the foundation and work from there.

"That could be interesting. I've never tried building a monster from the bottom up," Fenora said. "I generally work with skeletons and start with the core. You can use an intact skeleton, or take the core and add arms, legs, and a head from other skeletons. As long as you pair them properly, it works. But for today, we're going to work with a body. The state of the corps is up to us, as is the size, gender, and species."

"At least on the holodeck we don't have to worry about connecting nerves and blood vessels," Maya added. "We can fudge anything we want. I'd like to see how our monster would look if we make the arms smaller, much like a humanoid T-Rex." She paused for a moment. "Not a child's arms. I want adult arms, but shorter than the body would normally have."

Nala burst into a fit of giggles at the mental picture Fenora painted!

"Will the monster have a name so we won't continually call him, or her a monster?" Siadra was rather curious at that. "It will be interesting to see just how the creation will work out. What will the feet and legs be like? Frog like? Legs of a goat?"

"I think that would be appropriate." Maya smiled. "The name should fit the monster. Not that the name should be monstruous, but that it should fit what our creature looks like. Perhaps Boris for a male and Natasha for a female?"

"I say we give it draconiquis legs! Er, that is, one leg's a goat's leg, and the other's a dragon talon," Nala clarified.

"That would make it hard to walk," Fenora said. "It would be easier if the legs were the same size and type." She looked around at the others. "What do the rest of you think?"

Jena entered the holodeck. She had dressed for the apparent time period in a 19th Century turquoise dress with a high collared and her strawberry blonde hair done up in a bob. In one hand she carried a black leather doctor's bag. "Sorry, I'm late I wanted to dress the part." She frowned a little when the colour disappeared from her. "I'm Jena, by the way. I'm usually into plants, but I thought this might be fun."
