Mission:
Episode 2 - The Sins of History
Location: Holodeck 3 - Deck 5 - USS Artemis
Timeline: MD008 1630 hrs
"I say we give it draconiquis legs! Er, that is, one leg's a goat's leg, and the other's a dragon talon," Nala clarified.
"That would make it hard to walk," Fenora said. "It would be easier if the legs were the same size and type." She looked around at the others. "What do the rest of you think?"
Jena entered the holodeck. She had dressed for the apparent time period in a 19th Century turquoise dress with a high collared and her strawberry blonde hair done up in a bob. In one hand she carried a black leather doctor's bag. "Sorry, I'm late I wanted to dress the part." She frowned a little when the colour disappeared from her. "I'm Jena, by the way. I'm usually into plants, but I thought this might be fun."
"Hi Jena!" Nala waved.
Jena waved back. "Hi, Nala isn't it? My Aunt Evie told me you'd met." She said. "Have you read Mary Shelley's Frankenstein? It was the first book my Grandfather gave me when we met."
"Eyup. That sounds like what my Grandfather did with me. He introduced me to the writings of Clive Cussler...shortly before his death. Hey wait a minute! Evie's you're Aunt?!" Nala's jaw dropped slightly.
"Yes, my mother's Bajoran, so there's not much of a family resemblance." Jena said, blushing her hair away to expose her Vulcan ear. "My grandfather is an English Literature professor, so I've mostly read English and Bajoran authors, but I enjoy thrillers and a friend at the Academy introduced me to Clive Cussler's books Sahara is my favourite."
"They're pretty," Nala said, then thought for a moment.
"Nuts, I'm not sure if I've read that one yet. That's so cool!" Nala smiled excitedly.
Fenora listened to the conversation as she looked over the bodies they had to choose from. She wanted one with the best skeletal system as it would be easiest to build off. Some had full bodies, some were missing arms or legs. Did they want to go with the traditional monster that looked like a large, beefy humanoid, or one with more...variety. She decided they should have a little fun with this just to see how the body held up when they put the pieces together and selected what looked to be a prehistoric Vulcan body with no legs. The face had taken significant damage and would need to be reconstructed, which was perfect for Nala. One of the arms was broken, but the spine, hips, and pelvis were in good shape.
The Vulcan wheeled the body and its gurney into the main lab. "How does this one look to start with?"
Nala's head came around, and her eyes were immediately drawn to the face.
"Oh yeah! I get to place puzzle maker!" Nala squealed, bouncing on her toes in anticipation.
"I want everyone to have a part in this," Fenora replied.
"That is a lovely idea." Maya looked around. "If we're going to do this right, I will take charge of fluids. Every monster needs to be well lubricated." She would definitely need to use the computer if she had any hope of doing everything needed in the space of an afternoon. But, as this was fiction, she felt that bending the rules a bit was appropriate.
"I know this is a holoprogram and the bodies aren't real, but does anyone mind if I say a prayer of this Vulcan's body, before we begin?" Jena asked.
"Of course, Jena. I shall say one as well," Nala answered, then waited silently for a few minutes.
"I think that would be a lovely idea," Maya added.
Nala swept her hand toward Jena, indicating since she had brought it up first, she should have first honor.
Clearing her thought, Jena she said. "May the Prophets, take mercy on this poor unfortunate and may his Pagh remain with them in their temple."
Nala waited a moment after Jena finished, then sang a prayer in Cherokee mixed with Afrikaans.
Fenora raised an eyebrow. "That's an interesting combination," she said to Nala.
"Thank you. I wanted to represent both sides of my heritage," Nala smiled her thanks.
"Indeed. It's the thought that counts. Thank you both," Maya said. "Now, Let's see what we can do to put this poor creature together."
"Right on!" Nala rubbed her hands together excitedly.
Fenora checked the skeletal structure carefully for cracks or fissures. When she found none, she nodded. "The bones are good. I'll have a look at arms and legs while the rest of you take care of what we have so far."
"I've got his?...her?...their? face!" Nala didn't NEED to say it...but she did anyway.
Maya decided that even if the organs were intact, there were no fluids in the body and that alone would be a lengthy process. So, she added a machine to replace all the fluids to the program and connected it to the heart, the spine, the brain, and, to keep it simple, the body cavity. Medicine didn't quite work that way, but it looked good, and the computer would make it work anyway. "I do not apologize for the improvisation," she said when the monster was hooked up. "Once the arms and legs are attached, we can turn it on."
Fenora returned to the room and looked at the new machine. "That's a good idea. What would the rest of you like to do?" She looked specifically at Jera, Viessa, and Siadra.
"I don't mind for the improvisation. I am looking forward to seeing the creation move." taking a closer look at the monster. "Perfect for something spooky and would be great for Halloween." giving a smile.
"Well, if this works, I'm not sure he'd like to be a Halloween decoration," Fallon declared, coming back with a pair of legs that were a little too short for the body. Even though she'd joked about it earlier, they were in the best condition. "I've checked the bone structure. They'll need to be attached with the proper muscles and cartilage."
"Do we want to try that manually, or use the computer to wave a magic wand?" Maya asked. She was more concerned with time than anything.
"Probably the computer. That kind of detail alone will take hours," Fenora sighed.
"That's quite all right," Maya assured her. "This is more for the fun of it anyway. I'll be happy to add that to my wand's programming."
"Perfect." Fenora carefully placed the legs, checking to be sure they fit in the hip sockets and went well with the body as a whole. "Okay, now for the arms."
She turned and headed back into the body room.
Following after Fenora, Siadra spoke up. "are we still going to have the arms shorter than what would be for the torso, much like the T-Rex?" Siadra had been just observing what was going on and listening to the music.
"I think the arms should match the legs," Fenora said after a moment. "So, they'll be shorter, but not as short as a T'-Rex. We do want him to be able to fend for himself."
Nala overheard this comment and started to giggle, remembering the times when she and her siblings would play dinosaurs in the back yard.
Nala was busy piecing the monster's face back together...adding little quirks like stitches that looked like hammers, swords, and of course, lightning bolts.
"Oh, wait perhaps I can create an outfit for our creation." Siadra mused out loud.
"Please do," Maya said, turning from her mad scientist computer. "Our creature deserves to look good."
Fenora returned with a pair of arms on a cart. They were long enough for their creature to clasp his hands, but not much more. And, fortunately, they were proportional to the legs. She took her time checking them against the legs and torso, then checking how they fit into the skeletal structure. Finally, she had them positioned to her satisfaction and stood back. "I think it's ready for the doctor to wave her magic wand. Once everyone is done with their part, we can hook our monster up to the electricity and give it life."
