Episode 2 - The Sins of History
Location: Sick Bay - Deck 9 - USS Artemis
Timeline: MD013 2100 hrs
Siadra noticed something about Jonathan during the meeting. He had the earmarks of not having much sleep. Her suspicion was confirmed when he had put a stim patch upon his neck.
Several hours later after having her run, Siadra rang the chime of Jonathan's quarters. Her foot tapping rather impatiently.
"He better answer" Siadra mumbled to herself.
Jonathan staggered to the door dressed in his pajamas, The door slid open and his hair was a complete mess and he looked like he had just went five rounds with death and got his butt kicked and dark bags under his eyes. He slumped against the door frame. " What do you need Siadra? Whatever it is, now's not a good time. " He said weakly.
That caused Siadra's eyes to widen. "Okay, you are coming with me to sickbay, now. "
The Trill woman draped one of Jonathan's arms over her shoulder, and her arm around his waist. "Let’s go."
She did get some assistance in getting Jonathan to sick bay, by a passing personnel. Thanking them for the assistance.
Siadra caught sight of a pretty blonde nurse, nearby, "Excuse me uh, Nurse Houlihan" seeing her name badge.
"May I get some assistance here, with Lieutenant Corwin, and also is Doctor Canak here?"
Margaret set down the tablet she was going over and hurried over to the door. "Let's get him to a biobed. Can you tell me what happened?" It would help her get the preliminaries out of the way for the doctor.
Maya, hearing the commotion from her office, hurried out to main sickbay. While Margaret and Siadra helped Corwin to a biobed, she picked up her Feinberger and followed them. Since Margaret had already asked a question, she waited for the answer before asking any of her own.
As Jonathan was laid on the bio bed his eyes fluttered open. " Neural Suppressor. " Was all he managed to get out before fading out again.
"I noticed something during the briefing we had earlier. I saw Jonathan with a huge mug of coffee and he had also applied a stim patch upon himself."
She looked at Corwin with concern. "Neural Suppressor?"
Maya sighed. "Margaret, take a blood sample. I want to run a separate test on that."
When Margaret nodded, the doctor set the biobed to run a series of scans while she went over Jonathan with the Feinberger. "Has he done this before?"
Siadra shook her head. "He's not done this before, not as long as I have known him. " as a way of explanation, "I knew him during academy, and wasn't the sort to utilize stims."
Siadra tapped her lower lip for a moment as she thought, "He did seem to be rather troubled where this whole Vamcet situation is concerned."
"It looks like he's been using them a bit too much," Maya said, setting down her scanner so she could prepare a hypospray. "He'll need to detox and sleep. He hasn't been getting enough of that, either." She came back and injected the hypospray into his neck.
Margaret came back into the room with a PADD and handed it to the doctor "Here are the results of the blood test."
The doctor smiled her thanks as she took the PADD and quickly reviewed it. "Good. There's some damage to his liver and kidneys, but it doesn't seem to be permanent." She turned to Siadra. "He's going to need to stay off the stims and sleep. He's also going to have to go on a diet for the next week to help flush his system. After that, he'll be fine. Does he have someone who can monitor him, or will he do this on his own?"
Siadra looked over towards Jonathan an expression of concern. "No, he doesn't have anyone to monitor him, no one staying with him. Unless a friend would do? What would the monitoring entail?"
She knew from Jonathan that he had a very bad divorce, so he was hesitant in getting too close to ladies.
"A friend will do," Maya assured her. "Someone to check that he's eating at least two meals a day and that he's getting enough rest. I suggest six hours a night for the first week. Then I want him back here for another check."
Siadra nodded, "From what it looked like, he's been staying up all hours working on the case for the trial of Vamcet. Hopefully something can give him some sleep before the trial."
"I can give him something to help him sleep that will be more effective than stims. Those are addictive and have to be handled with care," Maya said. "Those could affect his ability to remember what he was trying to learn." She mentally ran over a list of possible drugs and treatments for the counselor. "I can keep him here and let him get a good seven hours of sleep, or I can send him back to his quarters with medication you can give him so he can sleep in his own bed. Which would you prefer?"
Siadra gazed at Jonathan for a few moments giving considerable thought as to what needed to be done.
"I feel he would sleep better in his own bed and I'll keep watch over him. Plus, I'll monitor him as well." Siadra having a rather determined lift to her chin.
"He isn't going to be allowed to get to his paperwork during the night. I'll see to that."
She walked over to where Jonathan was laying in the bio bed. "Okay now just to get him to his quarters."
"Good. I will give him something to help him sleep for the next eight hours. But he will need encouragement to not go back to the stims. He may wish to talk to the counselor if he feels a need to go back to them." While she spoke, Maya prepared another hypospray and administered it. "That will help with his recovery. He should be able to walk back to his quarters. If not, I have a chair you can use."
Margaret came back with a small bottle of pills. "These will help him sleep," she said, handing the bottle to Siadra. "One or two right before bed and he should sleep for seven or eight hours."
"Okay thank you." Siadra accepted the bottle then leaned towards Jonathan's ear.
"So, Jonathan, you've got a choice of walking to your quarters with me or I can give you a ride in the antigrav chair. That would be fun wouldn't it?"
Siadra having an impish smile looking over her shoulder towards Maya and giving her a wink.
"No racing in the corridors," Maya cautioned with a twinkle in her eye. "I don't need any more patients today." She paused before adding. "However, the anti-grav chair does have handlebars and a place to stand on the back--but you didn't hear that from me."
Jonathan looked at Siadra and gave an annoyed growl. " There is no way in hell I'm going to sit in that thing like some crippled old man who is at the end of his life, I'd rather crawl back to my quarters before sitting in that thing."
Maya folded her arms. "As I see it, you have three choices. Prove to me you can walk on your own without showing any effects of stim abuse, accept a ride back to your quarters, or stay here for the night. Each of those requires you to get a full eight hours of sleep. You will also need to return here in two days for more bloodwork. Then once a week for the next month. If I find you are not sleeping or that your blood tests show you're still taking stims, you will be relieved of duty, put on a detox program, and be referred to the counselor. If I hear of you crawling anywhere, you come back here for re-evaluation."
Maya signaled for him to stand. "Now, let's see you walk."
" You better listen to the Doctor." Siadra giving a smirk.
Cocking up an eyebrow at Siadra, Jonathan shot a glance at the doctor, he rose from the bed and started walking to the entrance then back to the biobed. He wasn't about to be kept in a bed that wasn't his own.
"Satisfied Doctor, Siadra?" Jonathan asked.
"For now," Maya replied. "As long as Lieutenant Molaur accompanies you."
"Indeed, that shall be done." Though there was a slight pout on Siadra's lips with a dance of laughter in her eyes. "Darn I was hoping to ride upon the wheelchair."
Giving a wink to Maya, Siadra linked her arm with Jonathan's. "Let’s go, time for you to slumber."
She looked back to Maya, "Thank you."
"You're welcome." Maya glanced at her patient, then back to Siadra. "Good luck."
